Do any of you feel… alien?
So, I made a comment about feeling like an alien due to my cp, yesterday I think it was, and I’ve been thinking about it non-stop since. I’ve been thinking that I’d rather actually be considered an alien than be considered an imperfect human. Not only am I in the chair and all, but my attitude and my mannerisms are different as well. Granted, I have the capability to be a tad bitter when I’m venting, but I never actually seen a disabled person (who was born that way) really hold the grudge against anyone. We (the majority) aren’t vain, we aren’t self-centered, and a lot of the time are more level headed than most. Sure there are times when we feel ignored and have to let people know we still exist, but it’s not for the same reason as a lot of people. I don’t know, it seems that we are more likely to appreciate our minds and intelligence more, and come up with our own views. I’m just going by what I’ve seen, but I’ve really never heard of a disabled person who gets wrapped up in fashion trends, or popular music, or anything like that, unless they have no other hope of fitting into society alone. I may be making no point at all, because I’ve only had about 4 other disabled friends ever in real life, but it seems that we live more of the indie lifestyle.
I’m starting to think it’s part of our disability, and in my view, its the best part. The question is, is this some sort of hindrance, or great evolutionary mental mutation of some sorts. Regardless, it makes me feel sort of alien, and it’s sort of nice to think that this actually gives me some sort of advantage.Thoughts?
It’s a very human quality to use our kickass brains to over come our physical limitations. It’s nothing new or really unique. People with disabilities get a lot of practice at this human adaptive skill that people without disabilities don’t always get, mostly because there is no other choice. It isn’t part of our disability but it sure is a result.
The indie lifestyle makes sense too. People that are marginalized by the mainstream are more likely to find a home in groups that tend to reject mainstream ideas. You’re not alien but most assuredly exhibiting the best traits of the human race. You put your incredible reasoning, problem solving intellect to good use and came to the conclusion that the man is bullshit.
