Being different is not the same as being less than. I have no problems with being different, it’s being thought of as less than that I find vexing. This is why I use words that mark me as different like crippled. It forces people to confront the fact that crippled means different not less than. So does retarded, disabled, gimp, or any other word used to designate those of us with visible differences. I’m not saying we’d make as good a fireman as able bodied people just that we’re not less because we don’t make good fireman. It’s not so hard to understand.
